What Are the Odds

By: Cara Barth

“The odds of you being born, in the moment you were born, to the parents that you have, with your specific DNA structure, is 1 in 400 trillion. 1 in 400 trillion–that’s huge! You’re a living miracle” ~ Mel Robbins

As I get older and continually reflect on my life with questions of, “Where have I been?” and “Where am I headed?” I always have to wonder the big “Why?” I always seem to drift to wanting the answers to “Why have I experienced the things I have? Why do others I know and love have to experience the things they have? Why? Why? Why?!”  Sometimes I even shout out to God in the hard times, “Why Was I Even Born?!”

During a particularly hard time recently, I was really questioning the “Whys” and I heard a speaker named Mel Robbins say something pretty powerful. Mel said that I had a, “1 in 400 trillion chance of existence.”  A 1 in 400 trillion chance of “Being.”  Really? I thought to myself.

After that moment, I have had a strange stirring in my spirit that I have not been able to shake. My “Whys” have shifted to “WOWs!” This stirring deep to my core seems to be an “aha” moment of the utter fact that I am truly and wonderfully made. It seems reasonable to say now, not only am I here due to beating extraordinary odds, but that also probably means I have a purpose that only I can complete in my own special way.

In a world where life comes at us very fast and the proverbial “bar” keeps being raised as to what we are supposed to look like, feel like, do, and think, seems to drown out the fact that we are the ONLY one who can or whoever will be our unique self! All the chatter of, “You need to fit-in and be like someone/everyone else” is ridiculous! I cannot ever accomplish this because I am “ME,” and according to the stats, that’s a wonderful thing in the bigger scheme of life!

“Every one of us is, in the cosmic perspective, precious. If a human disagrees with you, let him live. In a hundred billion galaxies, you will not find another.” ~ Carl Sagan

If the whole “1 in 400 trillion” fact didn’t resonate, then think about this analogy if you will…

“Imagine there was one life preserver thrown somewhere in some ocean and there is exactly one turtle in all of these oceans, swimming underwater somewhere. The probability that you came about and exist today is the same as that turtle sticking its head out of the water — in the middle of that life preserver. On one try.” ~ Precious Incarnation-Proverb

So, now what do I do with this information? I sat thinking about all of this and I think my conclusion is that we are a miracle! We have a purpose and our life is a gift. Everyone that has come and gone was a gift for growth in some way. We have to consider these “odds of existence” and respect the uniqueness of each and every one of us, as well as know we are all doing the best we can with what we have in doing the work of our unique purpose.

Oh, I know that people will continue to be difficult, life will continue to be very hard at times, and I will NEVER be able to answer all my “whys,” BUT knowing that I have beaten some pretty SERIOUS odds already, I am absolutely sure I can handle what’s to come….

Finally, guess what?! Now YOU know it too and as Dr. Ali Binazir said at the end of his Illustration of Being Born, “Now go forth and feel and act like the miracle that YOU are!”

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” ~ Psalm 139:14

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.” ~ Jeremiah 1:5

    Thank you so much Lisa,
I am glad to hear this resonated with you and I pray you begin to feel like the miracle God created to be!
