Treasured Keepsake

What’s your most treasured keepsake from your mother?
– by Mershon Niesner

My most treasured keepsake is an old-fashioned ring with two diamonds that I never take off. This precious ring belonged to my mother and grandmother who both died in their 30’s. I was eight when my mother died, my mother was three when she lost hers.

The ring’s original owners were both named Winnifred—my mom was called Winnie. My oldest daughter, also Winnie, is now in her 50’s with three daughters like her great-grandmother. I turned seventy-five last year and I’m very grateful to still be wearing this ring and that my daughter and I are both enjoying life past forty.
